American jazz pianist Greg Spero started Spirit Fingers in 2016, while on the road supporting pop star Halsey. The Spirit Fingers compositions, which he first composed in the upper level of a double decker bus in London during a Halsey tour, were an equal and opposite reaction to the simplicity of the pop music that Spero was playing night after night.

When back in the US, Spero recruited some of the best instrumentalists in the US to record and perform the Spirit Fingers material, eventually taking it on the road and returning to London, where a small dedicated fanbase formed. The complex and virtuosic compositions became standard material for young London artists as they became enamored with the deep intricate sound and its integration with the modern popular tastes that Spero was also performing and producing globally.
